The hot weather has arrived — at last. Temperatures are expected to hit 31 C today before the rain returns on Sunday, according to Environment Canada.
The sunshine arrives just as Vancouver’s 11 bathing beaches officially open tomorrow, with lifeguards on duty from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
And while beachgoers enjoy the sunshine, drivers are likely to feel the figurative heat of navigating through downtown road closures and while waiting to cross the border.
To kick off the Victoria Day long weekend, police will shut down Granville Street for the second consecutive year, starting tonight.
Vancouver police Const. Jana McGuinness said the closure is part of an effort to “crack down on rowdies” in the entertainment district.
Granville Street will be closed to traffic between Helmcken and Smithe from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. and will continue every Friday and Saturday night until September.
Motorists heading south should prepare for longer wait times at the border as Americans are rebuilding their side of the Peace Arch crossing. Starting Monday, four of the eight southbound inspection booths will be closed for six to eight weeks.
