Dumbos take flight in Brooklyn for first Dumbo Drop fundraiser

Toy elephants will take flight in Brooklyn Thursday as part of the first Dumbo Drop.

Its name may mean Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, but on Thursday, Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood is literally going to be filled with flying Dumbos.

And no, we’re not calling anyone stupid — we’re referring to the Dumbo Improvement District’s Dumbo Drop, a block party in which toy elephants get their chance to fly like Disney’s famous Dumbo. The elephants will parachute from area rooftops onto Washington Street starting at 6 p.m.

New Yorkers purchased the elephants for $20 each, and the one that lands closest to a target in the middle of Washington Street lands a $500 Dumbo shopping spree.

After the drop is over, adopters can pick up their keepsake elephants at Gleason’s Gym and take them home. They can also pick them up at The Archway from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday.

The Dumbo Drop and block party is a fundraiser for neighborhood schools PS 307 and Dock Street School. The free event also features music from Gaijin A Go Go!, FogoAzul New York City, Preschool of Rock, DJ Kai Song and others.

Plus, there will food and drinks, free crafts, a photobooth, rock-climbing wall from the NYPD and more. Things get underway starting at 5 p.m., with the drop taking place at 6 p.m.
