Dust up your cleaning skills

How do you dust furniture correctly and safely? – Signed, Betty in Toronto

Hello Betty,

Firstly, did you know that the world has twice as much dust today as it did in the last century? So yes, dusting is both important and necessary.

Secondly, when you don’t dust, you attract grease to the surface that attracts even more dust. So dusting is very important!

So how do we dust easily and correctly? Well, the good news is that it’s simple! To make your own dusting rags, use old cotton bed sheets that are cut or torn into large squares (24 x 24 inches).

Wet your hands under lukewarm running water, and then dry them with your dusting rag.

You now have the perfect amount of humidity in your dusting cloth to dust any surface and no chemicals or dusting products necessary.

This may sound overly simplified, but it is really easy and simple.

This is how museums dust so that they don’t damage furniture and objects in their collections.

Remember don’t add more water as too much moisture will damage the surfaces you are dusting.
