Dutch dominant in opener

An own goal may have started the scoring, but the Netherlands were worthy winners over underrated Denmark yesterday.

Although Germany was dominant against a 10-man Australia on Sunday, Holland’s 2-0 win might be the most impressive effort of the World Cup so far. Encouraging for Holland was the fact Arjen Robben seems to be recovered from injury, having made the substitute’s bench for the match although he didn’t see the field. Robben, who was named Man of the Match twice in the last World Cup, offers a pace and playmaking ability that will only add to a fluid Dutch attack.

Holland should be a lock to make the quarterfinals, with their precision passing and style able to pin down lesser opponents into their own half. Their problem traditionally, though, has been maintaining this tempo against the world’s better teams.
