Dwindling bear population raises concerns

Alberta conservationists are concerned about the dwindling population of grizzly bears killed by humans.

People killed 19 grizzlies last year by way of an accident, self-defence or other means, up from nine in 2007, according to Action Grizzly Bear.

“I think it’s an indication of inadequate action taken by the government to reduce grizzly mortality,” organization campaigner Carl Morrison said.

In 2008, six grizzlies were destroyed because they were a risk to humans, another six were killed in self-defence, four were killed by accident and others for various reasons.

Action Grizzly Bear says there are only 490 grizzlies in Alberta, which is less than half of what it should be.
