East Harlem celebrates Afro-Puerto Rican fest with street fair

East Harlem will celebrate Afro-Puerto Rican heritage this weekend at the Festival Santiago Apostol de Loiza a El Barrio.

The annual festival celebrates its 31st year and highlights El Barrio’s Afro-Boricua traditions.

Festival Santiago Apostol de Loizatakes place Friday to Sunday, at 105th Street between Lexington and Park avenues.

There will be a street market where visitors can buy handmade wares from artisans, traditional Afro-Puerto Rican foods, as well as experience salsa and bomba music.

On the festival’s final day, Mass at the Church of the Holy Agony takes place at 12:30 and a procession follows, with Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez as godfather of the celebration.

The festival begins at 4 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, ending at 8 p.m. each day.
