Colonia Verde returns with a revamp
Fort Greene’s Latin American farmhouse Colonia Verde reopened after a fire in February, and the new space is even better than its former James Beard-nominated design. The husband-and-wife team of chef Felipe Donnelly and sommelier Tamy Rofe have been working on new dishes since they were forced to close after a fire in February. The space is a bit different than you remember, in decor and menu, but the theme remains humble Latin American food that’s meant to be shared: grilled razor clams in a garlic-butter sauce, Colombian yucca hand pies in a creamy poblano pepper sauce, and cornhusk-wrapped fresh local fish with pickled vegetable salad.
Another fast-casual darling is born
Brooks Headley isn’t a household name yet, but he has rubbed elbows with newly minted fast-casual mogul David Chang on their new food delivery service, Maple. The former Del Posto chef opened the (first?) permanent outpost of his pop-up Superiority Burger in the former home of veggie mecca Dirt Candy (430 E. Ninth St., East Village) this week. Grubstreet reports that the menu includes a veggie burger, tofu wrap, burnt broccoli salad and, for dessert, sorbet and gelato. Unlike Chang’s fried chicken timesink Fuku, there’s no drinks menu. Swing by Thursday-Monday, 6-10 p.m.
Get a hot dog with cocktails at Chelsea pop-up
Popping up this summer behind Prova, home of the squid ink and uni Urchina Pizza, is a “speakeasy hot dog parlor” called Swanky Dog. The meat is actually a hot dog-sausage hybrid by Rastelli Meats, while the buns are the slightly sweet pillowy rolls of King’s Hawaiian. Toppings include housemade sauces, and there are cocktails, too, as well as a dessert Cannoli Dog. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday from 5 p.m. “to late” for the rest of summer — enter through the pizzeria until midnight, then an unmarked entrance on 19th Street.
