Edmonton teen’s bid for dream job falls short

An Edmonton journalism student’s dream to be an island caretaker in Australia was washed away in waves Thursday after she was excluded from an exclusive shortlist.

Linda Hoang, a 19-year-old student at Grant MacEwan, was selected in the Greatest Job In The World’s top 50 list among the hundreds of thousands that applied.

But she didn’t make it in the contest’s top 16 — something that was disappointing, but it was a good learning experience, said Hoang.

The final 16 candidates will be flying to Australia’s Hamilton Island from May 3-6 for the contest’s final selection process.

“It’s been a really great experience,” said Hoang. “I definitely thought that I could win and I thought that I could go to Australia for the interviews and everything.

“But being in the top 50 in the world is pretty good.”

Hoang said she enjoyed her time during the entire contest and it gave her experience in her studies after talking with so much media and blogging.

Tourism Queensland is offering up the special six-month position, which includes a $150,000 AUD salary and a lavish three-bedroom home that offers stunning views of Whitsunday Island.
