Edwin Alemany gets life in prison for Amy Lord murder

Edwin Alemanywill spend his life behind bars for fatally beating and stabbing a South Boston woman after kidnapping and robbing her in 2013, a Suffolk County judge ruled Tuesday.

Alemany was found guiltyMonday of first-degree murder in the kidnapping and murder of Amy Lord, a 24-year-old woman who lived on Dorchester Street. Alemany will serve his sentence without the possibility of parole –the mandatory sentence for his crimes.

A woman who survived one of Alemany’s attacks before his arrest for Lord’s murder spoke Tuesday morning before sentencing, The Boston Globe reported.

Kayleigh Ballantyne called Lord her “guardian angel” and said, “She helped me fight and do what I did.”

Ballantyne told the court she got a tattoo of an angel wing in honor of Lord.

“She will always be with me,” she said.

The defense attorney for Alemany conceded guilt on Friday in his closing statements, but claimed his client was insane. The jury rejected the insanity defense.

Alemany, 30, was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping, armed carjacking, arson and several counts of robbery, though was found not guilty of assault to rape.

Alemany attacked Lord on Dorchester Street as she headed to a gym around 6 a.m. on July 23, 2013. He then dragged her back to her apartment where he continued to beat her before forcing her into her car to withdraw money from five ATMs.

At 8:40 that morning, Lord’s Jeep Cherokee was found set ablaze in Southie. A bicyclist found Lord’s body in the Stony Brook Reservation in Hyde Park later that evening.
