eHealth controversy brewing

The second Ontario agency set up to create electronic health records isn’t faring much better than the first, which was shut down after spending nearly $650 million of taxpayers’ money, the opposition parties charged Thursday.

eHealth Ontario, which was created last September by the Liberal government to replace the Smart

Systems for Health Agency, has already doled out nearly $5 million in contracts without taking competitive bids.

Health Minister David Caplan insisted single-sourcing $5 million in contracts was allowed because of the “urgency” of the project, even though the deadline for electronic health records is 2015.

However, even Premier Dalton McGuinty admitted he was concerned.
