After winning the 24/One challenge six years ago, the members of Sketch decided to try their hand at a full-length film.
Scott Townend, a member of both the cast and crew, represents the Edmonton connection for the film. Of the eight members, Townend is the sole local contributor. According to him, the film is a labour of love for those involved.
“We literally had a budget of zero,” he said. “It truly is an indie film.”
Sketch revolves around the trials and tribulations of a comedy troupe. The group members are happy to perform their good-natured comedy, but one of them breaks out with an ethnic catchphrase. The group falls apart, while member Andrew Phung rises to international fame with his catchphrase.
Two years later, Jeffrey Patrick wants to re-form the group and continue to put out pure, classic comedy. Tensions rise as Phung’s fame clashes with the direction that Patrick would like to take the group.
Townend is optimistic the film will receive decent local support.
“We are hopeful to get a bunch of people out. The theatre holds about 550, I think,” he said.
