Peter Prescott of Mission of Burma, nominated for Album of the Year for “Unsound”

Do you believe the myth that whoever wins Artist of the Year is doomed to fail?

I believe that too much spotlight too fast is not always good for your art.

What made you want to move to Boston?

Art punkers, the girls. It was vibrant and mysterious to a kid from Wareham. I saw DMZ, The Real Kids, La Peste, The Neighborhoods, The Cars … I was hooked.

Danny Mekonnen of Debo Band, nominated for Artist of the Year, Live Artist of the Year, International Artist of the Year

Do you believe the myth that whoever wins Artist of the Year is doomed to fail?

No! Well, at least if we win, I hope not.

Who is your favorite Boston band ever?

There are so many good bands, but none as weird and inspiring as Neptune, the experimental punk rockers/sculptors who build their own instruments.

What made you want to move to Boston?

The jazz music scene. New York was too big and Boston had a good mix of talented young musicians and established music teachers.

Eilen Jewell nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year

Do you believe the myth that whoever wins Artist of the Year is doomed to fail?

No. I don’t believe in bad luck.

Who is your favorite Boston band ever?

Pixies. I have fond memories of being in college in Santa Fe, blasting Pixies from my dorm room. To my ears, they capture Boston’s grit perfectly.

What made you want to move to Boston?

I was pulled into the Boston music scene by some like-minded musician friends. There was something almost magnetic about the community.

Miss Tess of Miss Tess and the Bon Ton Parade, nominated for Jazz Artist of the Year

Do you believe the myth that whoever wins Artist of the Year is doomed to fail?

I’ve never heard that myth before. I thought you were only doomed for failure if you graduated from Berklee.

Who is your favorite Boston band ever?

The Coachmen. The musicianship was killer and it used to be real fun to go out and dance.

What made you want to move to Boston?

I grew up in Maryland. My sister is 11 years older than me, and lived in Boston in the late ’80s when the scene was really burgeoning for that stuff. She was a part of it and definitely passed along some of her musical loves to me, including local bands like Morphine.
