Is there going to be a Gossip Girl reboot?

Gossip Girl reboot

Years ago, Gossip Girl ruled the book and TV world with its polarizing characters, over-the-top drama and unhinged storylines. The lure of an Upper-Eastsider targeting his/her peers and revealing everyone’s deepest darkest secrets was too juicy of a plot to not get roped into. Although the culprit turned out to be a guy from Brooklyn (spoiler), the story ended with everyone having a happy ending – sort of. Is there more to the story for Dan, Serena, Blair, Chuck, Nate and the rest of their dysfunctional group? Or is there a new era of socialites ready to take on the role of Gossip Girl? Is there going to be a Gossip Girl reboot?

In true Gossip Girl fashion, there has been plenty of public speculation and talk regarding the reboot of the CW show.  CW President Mark Pedowitz confirmed that there’s talk about revamping the popular show at the TV Critics’ Association press tour. “There’s a discussion, but I don’t know if we’re there yet. I don’t know what it would be. A lot is up to Warner Bros. and [exec producers] Josh [Schwartz] and Steph[anie Savage], ’cause you don’t want to do anything without them,” said Pedowitz.

Blake Lively who played the Serena Van der Woodsen, the party girl with not so great self-control and a heart of gold, said that stepping back into the role of the socialite is not totally out of the question. In an interview with Variety in 2017, Lively commented on where she stood regarding a Gossip Girl reboot, “It sort of all depends. Would I do seven years of the show? No, because it’s hard work and I’ve got my babies, and I don’t want to be away from them that much. But I’ve just learned in life you never say never. I’m looking to do something that I haven’t done yet, not something that I did. But would I do that? Who knows—if it was good, if it made sense. We had so much fun shooting and living and working in New York City.”

Leighton Meester, who played Blair Waldorf – the preppy Queen bee with some self-control and a knack for headbands – was not so forthcoming about the idea of a reboot. Meester also spoke to Variety in 2017 about the idea, saying, “I guess I hear that [reunion talk] in fits and starts here and there, but it’s hard to say. If everyone was into it and if the timing was right, you know? I don’t want to say, ‘No, never…’”
