At the W, grab your skates, then grab a drink

At the W in the Financial District, you can get the spins — intentionally — on a sky-high ice-skating rink.

Visitors rent skates or bring their own and take to the hotel’s fifth-floor terrace to try out their best moves against a backdrop of historic sites. The Living Room, a rink-adjoining lounge, offers a list of mixologist Charlotte Voisey’s “apres skate” cocktails, including an incredibly smooth Hot Toddy; the Hot Chocolate Martini, deceptively, is also made cold. “We wanted to create a whimsical wonderland experience. A magical winter moment with friends or loved ones,” says General Manager Sofia Vandeale on the ambiance, from the menu (with bites from the downstairs BLT Bar & Grill) to the sleek, modern decor.

Safety is always a priority, but Vandeale is quick to assure that no obstacles have arisen for encouraging bar attendees to tie on some skates after tying on a few. The eco-friendly rink, by nature, facilitates usability. She explains: “Synthetic hybrid-ice paneling eliminates the need for electricity, and the nontoxic glide enhancer aids skaters of all ages and ability levels.”
