Barb from 'Stranger Things' discusses her 'unexpected' fame

Chelsea Handler speaks with the cast of "Stranger Things."Netflix

Barb lives — sort of. The underdog of “Stranger Things,” actress Shannon Purser, returns from the murky caverns of the Upside Down to sit down with Chelsea Handler on this week’s episode of Netflix’s “Chelsea” to discuss the Barb-mania that has been swarming the internet. With a birthday cake for co-star Gaten Matarazzo’s 14th birthday in-hand, the 19-year-old actress opens up to Handler about her unprecedented rise to fame following her character’s demise.

“It was totally unexpected,” she tells Handler. “I had a great time with the kids and with everybody on the show and then suddenly it blew up and people were tweeting about Barb. I didn’t think anybody would care and they did.”

The show’s creators have already promised to bring “justice for Barb” in the upcoming season — a required response following swarms of fans who grew close to the character’s relatable, albeit brief charm. After all, she’s the geeky third-wheeler lurking within all of us.

In the meanwhile, to fuel the fervor a bit more, Handler has taken matters into her own hands: “We came up with a new hashtag #barblivesmatter.”
