Not everyone is happy with the casting for the film adaptation of “The Giver.”
OK, I can’t be the only person who is upset about this, right? Taylor Swift has been cast in a (small, but still) role in the upcoming film adaptation of Lois Lowry’s iconic (seriously, this was my all time favorite book when I was in fourth grade) The Giver.
As an avid — and sensitive — young reader, I must have read this book at least 20 times. No joke. Recently, home in my childhood bedroom for a few days over Thanksgiving, I reread it (as much out of boredom as interest) and found that it still holds up.
So, when I read that T. Swift, she of the neverending odes to the naughty boys who have broken her delicate heart and the nonexistent acting chops (no, really, this is the extent of them), was going to make an appearance in a Giver movie, I was a little affronted.
Especially because the rest of the cast is shaping up to be pretty stellar: Jeff Bridges as the title carrier of all the world’s pain (and joy) and the inimitable Meryl Streep as the village matriarch responsible for assigning roles to the children when they come of age. (Katie Holmes is apparently slated to play Jonas’ mother, which I’m also not too psyched about but hey, she sort of lived the real life version of a woman brainwashed into believing a totally altered and whitewashed way of life was normal, so maybe she’ll know what she’s doing.)
Swift is set to play Rosemary, the young girl who was to inherit the role of Giver before Jonas. I suppose I can take consolation in already knowing how she fares (spoiler alert: not at all well). Also, we all know ole Tay Sway is no stranger to the many ways in which feelings can ravage a soul, so there’s that.
