Can you tell your Lana Del Rey apart from your Susan Boyle?

I mean, of course you can from their looks, but try it with your eyes closed!

Lana Del Rey first turned the indie-net on its ear a few months ago with her evocative name, image and songs, the fact that it was only available in scarce little bursts made her persona that much more tantalizing. As she starts playing more shows and the phone camera wielding public broadcasts more and more of her persona to our small little YouTube windows, I realized, she’s really just a hot Susan Boyle.

Actually, let me clarify, she’s a really really hot Susan Boyle. And this is not to say that Susan Boyle is unattractive, I swear. This is just to say that man-oh-man, Lana Del Rey is really drop-dead gorgeous, as the above photo from the Q Music Awards late last month will demonstrate. (By the way, if you’re not able to figure out from my ever-improving amateur Photoshop skills, Ms. Del Rey was not actually photographed with Ms. Boyle. I copied and pasted Suzie in next to her. And as far as I know, the “Dream a Little Dream” singer did not attend the Q Awards. Not really her audience.)

Anyway, back to my (hopefully controversial and bile-inspiring) comment that Lana Del Rey is just a hot Susan Boyle. Discerning ears may disagree, but listen to these samples below and try to figure out which lovely lady is singing. Is it Lana Del Rey or is it Susan Boyle? And even if you do score a perfect 10 on this test, try making your parents take it and see how they do. It really isn’t too different.

It’s not that LDR is ripping off SB, as much as it is a new twist on the quote that has long been attributed to Sam Phillips about Elvis: “Find me a white boy that can sing like a black man and I’ll make us both rich.” Except here, it’s basically just “Find me a really hot girl who can sing at least kind of as good as that woman in that YouTube video who kicked ass on the British version of that show with that guy Simon on it.”

Good luck!
