Caspian play first show since founding member’s sudden death

Friedrich, fourth from left, died last week. Chris Friedrich, fourth from left, died last week.

Chris Friedrich died unexpectedly last Sunday, on Aug. 25. The founding bassist of the instrumental post-rock band Caspian was 32 years old. The band made the announcement of his passing on their Facebook page a few days later, but did not disclose the cause of death and requested privacy.

This weekend they played a show in New Hampshire that Friedrich had set up, a benefit for a friend who needed a lung transplant.

Caspian have always been known for an intense live show, but from all accounts, this gig was a celebration of the life of a fallen brother.

“I knew it was going to be a definitive experience, a one-time life event. Of Caspain’s life. Of Chris’ family’s life. Of my life.I didn’t know HOW definitive… Until I felt the power, the presence, the overwhelming emotion when the music began,” wrote fan Joshua Utter on the band’s Facebook page after the New Hampshire gig.
