Video: CBS Atlanta turned off the Tony Awards

Apparently no one was actually watching the Tony Awards at CBS Atlanta, leading to this hilarious gaffe that is sure to be on blooper reels for years to come.

Last night, the Tony Awards ran past its 11 p.m. deadline on CBS. Most affiliates continued to air the 67th awards show for the remaining seven minutes, during which three final winners were announced. But CBS Atlanta failed to notice that the show was not yet over and moved on to begin airing its regularly scheduled programming, the local news. A news anchor tried to make up for the error by announcing the last categories, but obviously had no information about what shows were contenders for the night’s top nod — and no help from a reliable teleprompter — revealing that the Best Musical went to someone named Kenny Boots.

It might have seemed impossible to make Neil Patrick Harris look even better last night, but this bumbling news anchor figured out how. Someone from the American Theater Wing should send him tickets to “Kinky Boots,” stat.
