The official cause of death has not yet been revealed, but it is known that Barnett passed away while on vacation in Mexico. The comedian posted a photo on his Instagram just a few days before he died. “In mexico. Bought myself a sweater. Been accused of appropriation several times. In my head I just gave a lady some money so I ain’t cold. Either way. Swag heavy. Mixtape comin” his post read.
After the news of his death surfaced many fans commented on the very same picture with their condolences and shock.
Those who worked with Barnett also shared their grief over the sudden loss of such a young and talented man. “Our hearts are broken, as are those of everyone at Rel, at the news of Kevin Barnett’s passing,”Twentieth Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement. “He was an incredibly funny, wildly talented man who had so much more to do and so many more stories to tell. We send our thoughts and prayers to his friends and family during this difficult time.”

Comedy Central tweeted, “Kevin Barnett was an incredible comedian and writer, contributing to Broad City, the stand-up community and beyond. He’ll be greatly missed.”
Lil Rel Howery who worked with Barnett on Carmichael was also in disbelief over the news. “I was trying to figure out what to say but I can’t I’m truly heartbroken by this and just really hurt as the hours pass,” Howery said on Instagram. “So gifted and so dope and a true friend!!!! I don’t know what else to say this is crazy to me!!!!”
