Oprah on why she never married Stedman: “We would not have stayed together”

Oprah Winfrey and her partner, Stedman Graham have been together for 31 years. That is approximately an infinite loop in celebrity years! But Winfrey admits that they have no plans on ever getting married, because they’re perfectly happy like, not being married.

In the upcoming issue of Vogue’s September Issue, America’s unofficial matriarch slash best friend said mostly it’s about her doing her. “Live life on your own terms,” she said. Self-care for the win!

Also, to be fair, marriage has only come up once between the pair.  “Nobody believes it, but it’s true. The only time I brought it up was when I said to Stedman, ‘What would have happened if we had actually gotten married?’ And the answer is: ‘We wouldn’t be together.’ Damn girl!

“We would not have stayed together, because marriage requires a different way of being in this world. His interpretation of what it means to be a husband and what it would and what it would mean for me to be a wife would have been pretty traditional, and I would not have been able to fit into that,” Winfrey said. Goals, as per usual.

Winfrey was also recently in the news for dishing about Mindy Kaling’s pregnancy — that is, before Mindy Kaling dished herself — when she shared with People that she only recently found out Kaling was pregnant, anyway.

The two were standing in the film’s press line at Disney’s D23 earlier this month when Kaling decided to announce the news. “That’s when she told me. My mouth drooped,” Winfrey says. “‘What did you just say?’ she said, ‘Oh, Oprah, I don’t think you know. I’m 5 months pregnant.’ And I said ‘WHAAAAT?!’

“That was it, and we just kept smiling,” Winfrey continues. “And then I said to [Reese Witherspoon], ‘Did you know?’ and she said, ‘I just found out, too.’ And then I said to [“Wrinkle” director Ava DuVernay], ‘Did you know?’ And she said, ‘I just found out.’”

OK, but what would you give to be in a room with Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling? I mean, I literally have nothing to give, but I would give anything they wanted me to. My pride, my soul, my collection of cords that don’t fit anything. I would give it all.
