In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast, thereby merging two distinct cultures under their common love of good grub. For this Thanksgiving, why not get into the same spirit and combine New York’s vast and eclectic cuisine with some good old-fashioned turkey. Here’s where to go to get exotic.
Kittichai (60 Thompson St.), under the new direction of famed Australian chef Ty Bellingham, will serve up a $55 prix-fixe dinner featuring seared duck breast with Asian pear salad, roasted pumpkin soup with lobster and coconut milk, turkey osso bucco braised in massaman curry and thai-spiced donuts with Mekhong whiskey to top it all off.
At Aldea (31 W. 17th St.), chef George Mendes is serving a special three-course prix fixe for Thanksgiving that includes a Portuguese style roasted turkey with chorizo-brioche stuffing for $85 a person. Chef Mendes marinates the turkey the day before in a combination of Vinho Verde, olive oil, lots of paprika, garlic, bay leaf and onion, then slow-roasts it the morning of the big day.
From Nov. 24 through Nov. 28, Cooper Chimney (126 E. 28th St.) is serving a Thanksgiving-in-Mumbai feast with Tandoori turkey, Bhari-style spiced mashed potatoes, pumpkin and nut naan, curried yam casserole, spiced creamed spinach, cranberry-mango chutney, pumpkin kulfi and other dishes that give an Indian flair to your favorite autumnal foods.
At Alain Ducasse’s bistro Benoit (60 W. 55th St.), executive chef Philippe Bertineau will be offering a $55 prix-fixe menu that combines the traditions of Thanksgiving with classic French bistro flavors. The three-course prix-fixe menu includes a choice of appetizer, such as homemade foie gras terrine or tarte flambee, to entrees like Vermont farm-raised turkey with foie gras and chestnut stuffing, baby potato fricassee, pearl onions, and dessert — from good ol’ pumpkin pie to the more exotic and equally delicious orange tian on a sweet pie.
Chef Jim Botsacos of Molyvos (871 Seventh Ave.) will be putting an authentic Greek twist on the classic Thanksgiving dish with his Turkey a la Grecque. Enjoy this exotic turkey prepared confit (which means the turkey is submerged and cooked in fat) and then served with rice stuffing and lamb meat sausage. The three-course meal, which also features KolokithoSoupa (spiced butternut squash soup with thyme honey and whipped yogurt) and Milopita (caramelized apples wrapped in Phyllo with caramel and topped with cinnamon ice cream) for dessert, is $45 per diner.
