Vincenzo Cangemi has proven that imaginative bartenders can be found anywhere — including a Chelsea pizzeria.
A three-judge panel awarded the Ovest Pizzoteca and Bar mixologist the regional Most Imaginative Bartender title for his Bombay Sapphire-based drink at the United States Bartenders’ Guild competition last month.
On Monday, he will face off against 39 of the country’s best bartenders in Las Vegas for the national title, which will be awarded based on appearance, aroma, imagination and taste. Try your hand at his winning cocktail.
1.75 oz Bombay Sapphire gin
0.5 oz Solerno blood orange liquor
0.75oz reduction of fresh chamomile flowers and ginger beer
0.5 oz lemon juice
6-7 yellow endive leaves
1 bar spoon coriander seeds
Pour lemon juice, coriander and reduction into a shaker. Muddle until the seeds break, then add endive, holding one leaf in reserve, and muddle. Add alcohols. Shake and double strain into a coupette. Garnish with endive leaf.
