Conan O’Brien plans to broadcast his TBS show “Conan” from San Diego Comic-Con July 8-12 in 2015. It’s the strongest indicator yet that he’s truly not in the running for the “Late Show” gig once David Letterman steps down. Still plenty of time to pick one of Metro’s candidates!

It’s a new move for a late night host. No one else has tried to run a show from that venue, despite the increasing size and clout of SDCC. O’Brien will get prime access to the hordes of stars who head to the annual festival to promote TV shows, movies and presumably some comics. Also, the wealth of cosplayers seems like ripe territory for the kinds of shenanigans O’Brien is known to get up to. He’ll be at the Spreckels Theater.

Is this a sign of the increasingly mainstream nature of Comic-Con? O’Brien, with his perpetual underdog status, might fit in better than some of the other late night hosts, but for those mourning the disappearance of a festival once devoted to actual comics, this is probably just another sign of the Hollywoodization of the whole thing. Guys, he’ll be really funny. It’ll be fine.
