Restaurateur Michael Schulson of Sampan and Graffiti Bar in Philly and Izakaya at the Borgata in Atlantic City is giving us a new beer garden option — and it’s a big one. On July 10, the 20,000-square-foot Independence Beer Garden will open at Sixth and Market streets in Old City, right near the Liberty Bell and other historic attractions.

Travis Masar of “Top Chef” Season 11 iscoming up with the menu, which will focus on American cuisine, and the drinks will be poured from 40 taps featuring regional and domestic craft beers. Go USA!

Seating will be communal, with two bars, picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, fire pits and games, including ping pong tables and Jenga, plus a 10-foot TV screen. The space is designed and landscaped by Groundswell Design Group, who also did Festival Pier and the new Spruce Street Harbor Park.

Independence Beer Garden will be open every day, from 11 a.m. The plan is to keep it open year-round, weather permitting, with fans and heaters keeping the temps comfortable.
