The Word: Eminem doesn't mean gay slurs to insult gay people

Eminem was using "gay" as an insult, not to mean gay.

Eminem just wants to be free to say what's on his mind, mmkay?

Eminem is totally cool with gay people, OK? You may not have gotten that impression from his derisive use of "gay-looking" and "f—t" on his new album, but allow him to clear up the confusion: He was just using "gay" as an insult, not to mean gay.

Eminem says that when he began his career, he "never really equated those words" with actual gay people.

"It was more like calling someone a bitch or a punk or a—hole," he told Rolling Stone. "So that word was just thrown around so freely back then. It goes back to that battle, back and forth in my head, of wanting to feel free to say what I want to say, and then [worrying about] what may or may not affect people."

Phew! I'm sure the gay community is glad they got that cleared up. And I'm sure we'll all sleep better knowing that no one is restricting Eminem's freedom to say what he wants to say, even if what he wants to say is "f—t," a lot.

Eminem never got past the ninth grade (though he tried for three years). But his daughter, Hailie Scott, is not only on track to graduate, she also apparently rules the school.

Hailie, the rapper’s daughter with his ex-wife Kim Scott, was a frequent subject of his music when she was a little girl. She’s 17 now and just got crowned Homecoming Queen of Chippewa Valley High School in her hometown in Michigan.
