Mexico’s 60-year-old national dance company celebrates the country’s storied history, from Mayan and Aztec rituals to the 1910 Revolution to modern-day traditions, with bright theatrical choreography. If every history lesson included the elaborate costumes and intense energy of these regional folk dances, we’d all be history buffs and booking trips to rural Mexico.

Anna Myer and Dancers collaborate with teen street artists from Boston’s public housing developments to perform “Hoop Suite,” an inner-city rap-opera with hip-hop, modern dance, live string instruments and basketballs. Later, company dancers and cellists interact on a high-tech stage in the world premiere of “Hindsight Now.”

This extremely decorated modern dance company will present five works, all for the first time in Boston. Included are the 1978 minimalist piece “North Star” and the darker 2011 “Crisis Variations.” Dance newbies unfamiliar with Lubovitch’s company, may have seen his work elsewhere: The choreographer did Broadway shows “Into The Woods” and “The King and I,” plus dances for gold medal figure skaters Peggy Fleming and Dorothy Hamill.

Boston Ballet’s 49th season opens with their Fall Preview, a showcase that includes resident choreographer Jorma Elo’s world premiere of “Repertory,” also “Rooster,” set to music by the Rolling Stones, and mysteriously symbolic “The Second Detail.” The company’s version of “The Nutcracker” opens November 23, this year with new sets and costumes.

The José Mateo Ballet Thea-tre opens its 27th season with a concert that includes “Time Beyond Time,” a depiction of an ill-fated couple through multiple dimensions, and “Dancers’ Overture,” which hasn’t appeared on stage since 2001. At the cabaret-style Sanctuary Theatre, audiences will see the dancers close-up, an unusual experience for this type of performance.

In their Boston debut, choreographer Kyle Abraham and his seven-member company, Abraham.In.Motion, combine hip-hop dance, ballet, classic soul and contemporary classic music in a narrative about the loss of communication in an urban community. The Pittsburgh native centers his audio-visual story around the closure of his hometown radio station. Dance critic Debra Cash leads a pre-show talk before each performance.
