Finding love (and religion)

“Jewtopia,” a comedy by Brian Fogel and Sam Wolfson, is a niche show. That is, like shows titled “Menopause the Musical” and “Nunsense,” it may not appeal to everyone. Yet even non-Jews will hopefully recognize the humor in Fogel and Wolfson’s charming play, which ran for over 1,000 performances Off-Broadway in the mid-2000s and is now getting a revival at The Broad Hollow Theatre Company’s BayWay Arts Center in East Islip.

“Jewtopia,” is the story of two life-long friends — Jewish Adam and gentile Chris — and their exploits as they try to find women of each other’s religion to date. Adam wants to escape the faith, while Chris is determined to wed a nice, Jewish girl. The two begin to teach one another how to woo the ladies of their choosing.

Marian Waller’s delightful production features a fully committed cast, led by Bob Lingner as Chris and Dan Sussman as Adam. Appropriately, Linger is suave and goofy, while Sussman is just goofy. Both are incredibly charming. Jennifer Hope is a hoot as, among other roles, a wannabe Fran Drescher. Howie Orlick, Joan Rubenstein, Lon Shomer and Michelle Ramos have opportunities to shine as well. They do.
