‘Fraulein Maria’ is a real case of D’oh-re-mi

“Fraulein Maria” is light, funny and just irreverent enough to fill a room with appreciative laughter.

“Fraulein Maria” is light, funny and just irreverent enough to fill a room with appreciative laughter. But as the first show on the main stage of the spectacularly refurbished Paramount Theatre, the deconstructed interpretation of “The Sound of Music” just doesn’t cut it. The 70-minute spoof feels more like an opening act than a main event.

Creator and choreographer Doug Elkins relies on a solid ensemble of dancers and minimal props to loosely tell the tale of the world’s most beloved nun and the famous singing von Trapp family. Elkin employs a trio of Marias, silly comedy and typical gender-bending farce as the troupe melds together a nicely choreographed medley of dance ranging from classical to b-boy.
