After a long winter, it’s nice to spend a day outdoors with the one you love, but courtship in the city can be difficult – and expensive.
Looking to romance your boo on a budget? Look no further. Plan the perfect spring date for free.
Here are Metro’s five free outdoor date ideas in New York City:
1) Brooklyn Botanic Gardens
Find bliss at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. This 52-acre park sets the stage for a romantic stroll and quiet conversation, and is easily less crowded than Central Park. The garden, located in Kings County, is filled with hundreds of colorful blossoming flowers, a serene waterfall, waterside benches, and beautiful wooden bridges.
2) Governor’s Island
The ferry to Governor’s Island, which departs from the Battery Maritime Bldg, is entirely free. The 172-acre island includes a 2.2-mile bike path, mini golf, a picnic area, plus military sites such as Admiral’s house and a ‘ghost town’ at Nolan Park. Pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic on the spacious grass field or grab a bite to eat form one of the many food vendors on the island.
3) Public Boathouse Kayaking
Nothing proves the strength of a couple’s bond more than teamwork. Take a kayak out along the Hudson River and enjoy the serenity of being off the island. Public boathouses such as the Downtown Boathouse and Long Island Community Boathouse provide free kayaking.
4) Socrates Sculpture Park
On the East River, overlooking Roosevelt Island and the Upper East Side, the Socrates Sculpture Park is perfect for couples to express their artsy side. You’ll want to bring your camera to this park as it is filled with interesting art sculptures and light shows. And don’t forget your blanket for Wednesday night movies in the park.
5) Bronx Zoo
Step out of the city and into wild life when visiting some furry friends at the Bronx Zoo. The zoo offers a special “pay what you wish on Wednesdays” deal. Your mate will surely be pleased.
