Shut out of The Great GoogaMooga? Not to worry. The 18th annual Taste of
Tribeca festival promises a culinary celebration to rival that of the
Brooklyn rookie.
The ever-growing festival, which started in 1994
with 25 participating restaurants and grew to boast more than 70 this
year, highlights the area’s eclectic cuisine. Proceeds benefit the arts
programs of two local public schools, PS 150 and PS 234.
“Taste of
Tribeca now has over 70 restaurants participating, which shows both the
culinary growth in the neighborhood and the way the community has come
together, in support of its public schools,” says Faith Paris, Taste of
Tribeca co-chair.
So how does it work? Participating restaurants
donate 1,000 samples for free. “They’re incredibly generous,” Paris
says. “We’re so appreciative to the restaurants and chefs for donating
their time and expertise. … It’s a community event even people outside
the neighborhood are excited for.”
There’s something for everyone at
the festival, from food and wine tastings, a cook-off between master
chefs and a Kid’s Zone offering all-day activities for little ones.
The
festival runs from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., but Paris recommends
getting there as soon as doors open. “Get to your favorites early,” she
says. “Some samples are gone very quickly.” She recommends making a
beeline for Walker’s pulled-pork sandwiches.
Other participating restaurants include Grandaisy Bakery, Kutsher’s Tribeca and neighborhood mainstay Tribeca Grill.
General Admission is $50 and includes six tastings.
