Is the city of eight million cranky and cold New Yorkers driving you to your breaking point?

Is the city of eight million cranky and cold New Yorkers driving you to your breaking point? Feel like hijacking a fast car just to escape? Do the next best thing tonight and attend the paperback launch party for Jami Attenberg’s “The Melting Season,” where Attenberg, along with nine writers and bloggers, will read five-minute road-trip stories.

“They’re people I think have really fresh voices and interesting ideas and who are funny, smart and talented,” says Attenberg on tonight’s readers. Attenberg herself will read from “The Melting Season,” her funny and touching novel about one young woman’s escape (and subsequent road trip of self-discovery) from a damaging marriage.

Hosting and planning literary events is nothing new for Attenberg. “I go to a lot of readings and even host them in my house. It’s really important for me to be a part of the community here, so I try to give back to it.”

Tonight’s contributors include Ron Currie, Jr. — author or “Everything Matters!” — Sarah Glidden of “How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less” and “This American Life” contributor Rosie Schaap, among others.

And if you’re still feeling like escaping, Attenberg recommends just exploring your own city. “New York is so great to people-watch and look at art; there’s just a million things to look at. You just have to keep your mind open, your eyes open and your heart open.”
