In a rare convergence of Internet memes and hilarious people in celebration of cat food, The Friskies awards show in Manhattan Tuesday night proved to be the furriest feline fête in town.
VIPs rubbed tails with comedians and cat food enthusiasts Michael Ian Black and Angela Kinsey, as generational icon Grumpy Cat sat propped on a pillow, appearing underwhelmed and ready to leave. She was there to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor that left her completely unfazed. Meanwhile, Black joked with reporters about tinkling on Grumpy Cat as Kinsey admitted only recently learning her own pet cat is female.
But it was Grumpy who stole the show once again as she managed to nail each hard-hitting question with grace and eloquence. A lot has happened in the world since Metro last caught up with Grumpy, but little of it set her tiny, sandpaper-like tongue wagging.
Metro: What are your thoughts on the government shutdown?
Grumpy Cat: Politics pretty much suck.
What do you think of Obamacare?
Again, politics – not my forte.
Did you see Miley Cyrus’ twerking performance at the VMAs?
There were quite a few Grumpy Cat memes out there after that, which said twerking should pretty much end.
Have you seen Snoopybabe – the new famous cat from China?
Snoopybabe. Who’s that?
How’s your book tour going?
[embedgallery id=237135]I’ve made several appearances for the book. The fans are so demanding. Everyone wants a picture. It’s so tiring.
What do you think of Friskies?
The Friskies flakes are the best.
How do you feel about winning the Lifetime Achievement Award?
Very, very let down.
What do you think of NYC?
There are lots of people and it kind of stinks.
Any plans to retire soon?
We are just at the beginning of the Grumpy show.
After Grumpy Cat decided she was done speaking with us, we caught up with her owners, siblings Tabatha and Bryan Bundesen, who hinted that a Grumpy Cat movie is in the near future.
Metro: How does Grumpy do on big travel trips?
Tabatha: It’s taken some getting used to for her. But I think now she is so good at it. I bring the carrier out and she crawls into it like, ‘OK, let’s go!’ She is a carry-on so she rides under the seat in front of me. As you can see, she is really docile here. She’s like that on the plane, too.
How do you ensure she is safe and comfortable during an event like this with all these people picking her up?
Tabatha: This has probably been the event where she has been held the most. We usually don’t let that many people hold her because we don’t want her to get stressed out. Unless it’s the middle of the night, she lays there and is nice and calm and she has always been that way. She deals with it really well. I think it’s probably been more stressful for us.
What’s next for you?
Bryan: We are working on the Grumpy Cat movie. Broken Roads Productions has the rights to the movie and they are actually pitching a script to us and studios really soon, so hopefully we will have some more details on that out.
Any hints you can give us about the plot?
We are pushing for a family-friendly comedy. Grumpy Cat will probably be animated, with real people. Just family-friendly and fun is what we are going for.
Comedian Michael Ian Black and "Office" star Angela Kinsey, who is a cat lady both on- and offscreen, were working on their budding friendship of 90 minutes. In a candid conversation, they discussed their favorite flavors of cat food, cat gender roles and the possibility of a "Wet Hot American Summer" reunion.
Metro: What was your first impression of Grumpy Cat when you met her?
Black: I was a little starstruck meeting Grumpy Cat. There is no bigger Internet cat. To meet an actual meme, that’s pretty exciting.
Kinsey: I’ve never met a meme. This is my first meme. I got weird when I met her. I changed my voice and how I talked.
Black: You know what was weird, Grumpy Cat was peeing on people. I got so excited, I peed on Grumpy Cat.
Kinsey: Yes, but you did it on purpose and that was just awkward for everybody.
Is she really as grumpy as expected?
Black: She is happier than I would have thought. Also, stinkier than I would have thought.
Do you have cats of your own?
Kinsey: Yes, I have a rescue cat named Otter, who is a crazy old lady. She is feral and weird.
Black: I have a rescue cat named Alfalfa, who is pretty chill.
Have you ever tasted..
Black: I was gonna say, that’s an inappropriate question!
Kinsey: [laughs] Yeah, this just got dark.
Black: I mean the answer is yes, but… I don’t know how you know.
No, no, Friskies. Have you ever actually tasted it?
Black: It was important to me that if I was going to host The Friskies that I sampled some of the product. So I had the lung-flavored Friskies. Also, the free-range lamb throat…
How was it?
Who is the second biggest cat fan on “The Office”?
Kinsey: I would say the cat fan that trumps us all is Jenna [Fischer]. She worked with a rescue agency for a long time and actually fostered kittens. She is really passionate about it. She hosted an event called the Fur Ball and the Skirball.
Michael: Yes, that’s a kind of second-tier Friskies event.
Angela has a lot of cat dilemmas on the show. Have you experienced any of those cat dilemmas in real life?
Kinsey: My cat is so crazy. He thinks every day someone is coming to kill us. That's pretty much how he lives. Oh, and I just found out Otter is a she. That was news. All these years, it explains a lot.
Black: Did she have toilet babies?
Kinsey: Yes, she had a baby in a toilet. And I was like, ‘What, you weren’t just getting chubby, that was a baby!?” No, but she hid behind a couch and I walked behind her and scared her and she shot straight up and clawed the paint off the wall. I was like, ‘That’s just a day with Otter.'
One last question. Any chance for a "Wet Hot American Summer" reunion?
Black: There is speculation. But beyond that, no.
