Jared Leto has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Rayon, a male-to-female transsexual living with HIV in “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Leto shares the screen with Matthew McConaughey, who is also nominated for his performance as a homophobe and racist who has to deal with people he doesn’t like as he himself battles the disease.

Leto, 42, first came to prominence in the mid-1990s as Jordan Catalano, the dream boy of Claire Danes’ teenager in the TV show “My So-Called Life.” He also appeared in films like “Prefontaine,” “Fight Club,” “Requiem for a Dream,” “Panic Room” and “Chapter 27,” for which he gained 67 pounds to play John Lennon’s murderer, Mark David Chapman.

This was Leto’s first nomination.
