Jemina Pearl’s got a new jam

When Nashville’s Be Your Own Pet broke up in 2008, Jemina Pearl and bandmate John Eatherly decided to take their act to Brooklyn. Although Be Your Own Pet had discussed moving to New York, it took the breakup to spur the transition.

Still raw from what seemed a sudden split, Pearl took her act solo with the help of Eatherly. Like any kind of breakup, the leftover feelings helped spur her songwriting. Her debut album, which dropped last month, is called “Break it Up,” so it’s pretty clear what’s on her mind.

Solo work has its perks, though. “It’s definitely very different not having four people, all of us having to agree,” she says. “Really, writing the songs, it’s been John and myself getting to experiment and do whatever we want.”
