In September 2015, Cathriona White, girlfriend of funny man Jim Carrey, died unexpectedly of an apparent suicide — devastating friends, family and the celebrated actor. She was found surrounded by prescription painkillers, a blood-pressure medication and a sleep aid medication. A toxicology report released by the Los Angeles County Coroner's office listed four types of drugs in her system.
One year following the tragedy, Carrey is being sued by White’s estranged husband, Mark Burton, in a wrongful death lawsuit which was filed on Monday. Burton accuses Carrey of having a hand in White’s suicide, by providing her with drugs when he knew she was prone to depression. According to TMZ, three of the medications were found in pill bottles with the name Arthur King, an alias he claims Carrey uses to fill his prescriptions.
In a statement obtained byPEOPLE, Carrey responds to the allegations:
"I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. Cat's troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone's control."
“The Mask” star may have a way out, however.TMZ reportsthat his representatives say the meds were obtained using “routine practices,” as many celebrities use an alias to “protect their privacy.”
TMZ also claims that Carrey “looks to be in the clear,”however, his doctor who wrote the prescription could be in hot water.
