Stunned fans took initial reports of his passing as an Internet hoax, but the news was confirmed by a tweet from Bowie's son, film director Duncan Jones, who tweeted a photo of himself as an infant on his father's shoulders along with the message, "Very sorry and sad to say it's true. I'll be offline for a while. Love to all." In addition to Jones, Bowie is survived by his wife, model Iman, and their daughter.
