Seeking a change of pace this weekend? Head to Red Bull Studios, where you’ll find LIVING, American artist Peter Coffin’s new solo exhibition, which opened to the public on June 18.

LIVING is all about engaging its audience, whether it comes down to you projecting your own ideas and experiences onto the ideological bumper stickers on a fully-functional DeLorean or seeing yourself reflected in a set of invisibly rotating mirrors.

Among the works that articulate “Coffin’s longstanding interest in the relationship between the life of the object and the approach of the viewer” is an untitled piece that immerses its spectator into an environment meant to be the interpretation of a movie. You won’t find any sights or sounds from any movie you know here, though – only the soundtrack composed by musicians who watched the movie on silent, along with clouds of smoke and color-changing lights projecting shifting patterns onto the floor.

If you stop by the gallery on the right day, you might be able to catch the third volume of Coffin’s “Music for Plants” album series, as various live musicians will play every two weeks with the intention of encouraging the plants’ growth.

The thought-provoking pieces are intended to break down traditional notions of art, like who is normally “allowed” to attend an art show. LIVING is open to the public free of charge from Wednesday to Sunday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. until September 16 - all people, including those with little prior art-going experience, are encouraged to stop by.

Red Bull Studios are located at 220 West 18th Street.
