Local book event: 'Small Mercies' by Eddie Joyce

This novel examines Staten Island in a post-9/11 New York, with a powerful narrative revolving around one family, coping with loss.
Small Mercies

"Small Mercies" comes out March 10.

"Small Mercies" may be Eddie Joyce's first novel, but it has book reviewers and Pulizer Prize-winning authors paying attention. The story centers around an Italian Irish-American family living on Staten Island, each family member dealing with the death of the family's youngest son in various ways.

Ten years have passed since Bobby Amendola died as a firefighter responding to the 9/11 attacks, but the wound has scabbed differently for each family member, including his widow and two brothers. This is a book about learning how to accept grief and finding a way to move on, which can be done in a myriad of ways.
