Map shows favorite holiday movies by state

“Elf” and “Home Alone” were the most popular across the U.S.

Christmas isn’t complete without the quintessentialholiday movie — whether it’s a classic tearjerker like “It’s a Wonderful Life,” or a modern-day comedy like “Elf.”

As households in the country being to cozy up in front of their TVs, computers or smartphone screens to honor this tradition, CableTV.com decided to find out the favorite holiday in each state.

The site took the “top-rated holiday movies as ranked by viewers over at AMC (American Movie Classics),” then “cross-referenced them with Google Trends state data from the past decade to see which holiday favorites were most likely to pop up on TVs,” in each state.

“Elf”(2003) and “Home Alone” (1990) were the most popular across the U.S., according to the findings, but nearby states tended to also have movies in common.

The most interesting finding, however was that states favored where the holiday’s were took place:

  • Connecticut: "Christmas in Connecticut" (1945)
  • Illinois: "Home Alone" (1990)
  • New York: "It’s a Wonderful Life" (1946)
  • Vermont: "White Christmas" (1954)

I guess Christmas is really about being home for the holidays.
