For less than the price of a 3-D movie, watch four troupes strut their stuff at City Center’s glorious theater. The annual Fall for Dance blowout attracts people passionate about favorite performers and choreographers, as well as curiosity seekers and bargain hunters from all over the region. There are ensembles from nine countries and five American states.
You’ve already missed ABT’s Herman Cornejo and Luciana Paris in Twyla Tharp’s rough-and-tumble “Sinatra Suite,” along with tap dancers, the Hong Kong Ballet and the Martha Graham Dance Company in a shatteringly powerful work from 1936. Tonight and tomorrow, catch a live glimpse of the gang featured in The CW’s “Breaking Pointe,” Ballet West, plus Nan Jombang from West Sumatra and the venerable Moiseyev from Moscow. Coming Thursday through Saturday are an all-male hula halau from Honolulu, a dance with language by Jodi Melnick to music by Steven Reker and People Get Ready. Christopher Wheeldon’s duet to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel” music will also be onstage, as well as a solo in the Kuchipudi style, with live music, by Shantala Shivalingappa.
Closing out the festival Oct. 11 through 13 is a thoroughly international card, with Seoul’s Laboratory Dance Project (combining new dance with hip-hop and martial arts, to music by Goran Bregovic) and Circa, an Australian circus. Maria Pages Compania, also with live music, arrives from Seville, Spain, with a new-style flamenco work inspired by “Don Quixote” and the poetry of Neruda, Benedetti, Machado and Baudelaire.
These extraordinary mixed bills expose the many facets of world dance to viewers hungry for diverse experiences. With tickets so reasonable, you really can’t afford to stay home.
