Is ‘The Nun’ based on real events? Its director has an admission to make

Demian Bichir in The Nun

While they were obviously full of scares and frights, part of the success of The Conjuring franchise could also be put down to how it blended real events with the supernatural.

That’s because all four installments to “The Conjuring” franchise, “Annabelle,” “Annabelle: Creation,” but especially “The Conjuring” and “The Conjuring 2,” presented dramatized versions of the real-life cases of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who are played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in the series.

So, since “The Nun” marks the fifth installment in the franchise, I was intrigued to know whether, like its predecessors, it was based on real events. Luckily I had the chance to ask “The Nun’s” director Corin Hardy that very question recently, which provoked him to make an admission.

“I should completely and lie and say everything is based on a true story. [Laughs] The other ‘Conjuring’ movies obviously are based on true accounts on the Warrens. ‘The Nun’ is a little bit more fictionalized.”

Set in 1952, “The Nun” follows Demian Bichir’s Father Burke and Taissa Farmiga’s Sister Irene as they visit a Romanian monastery that has been beset by supernatural activities, the latest of which saw one of the nun’s commit suicide.

As you’d expect, things only get more and more terrifying, as the duo, alongside local villager Frenchie, find themselves face to face with what has been terrifying the nuns for centuries.

Those of you eager for more from “The Conjuring” franchise don’t have to wait too much longer, because not only has a third “Annabelle” film been announced, but during my recent conversation with Vera Farmiga she confirmed that discussions are already ongoing for another “Conjuring” movie, too.

“We are hoping that in the next year or two that there is number 3. I know the script has been worked on. I could be wrong. They could be scrapping it. But the last I heard it has something to do with some werewolf case.”

“I was given a book by Lorraine and Tony, her son-in-law, who has moved into the Ed Warren position in that family, and there’s a book called ‘Werewolf.’ But I’ve not read it yet, so I am sure the answers are in that.”

In the meantime, make sure to check out “The Nun,” which is now in cinemas.
