We can’t wait to see Wes Anderson’s latest. “Isle of Dogs,” the stop motion animated tale of a dog gang (voiced by Bryan Cranston, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Murray and more favorites) banished to a trash island in Japan, comes out on March 23, and tickets are already on sale for screenings at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema nationwide. Until then, the national theater chain has planned a fun Instagram contest for dog owners who are also Wes Anderson fans.
Here’s how it works: Post an Instagram photo of your dog dressed up as your favorite Wes Anderson character and tag it #WesAnderDogs. Alamo will select the best dressed pup and feature its photo in a trailer that will air before “Isle of Dogs” screenings across the country.
You have until Sunday, March 18 to enter, which should give you ample time to brainstorm whether your dog’s a Margo or a Richie, a Steve Zissou or a Max Fischer — hell, maybe even a Mr. Fox?
If you do end up attending the film at Alamo, you can look forward to a special menu of Japanese eats, like veggies with soba noodles, chicken yakitori and matcha green tea cookies, plus dog treats to take back home to your own woofer. If you happen to be in San Francisco on March 19, you’ll get the chance to see the film with pup-in-tow at Roxie Theater, which is hosting a Bring Your Own Dog advance screening.
The storyline, the dogs, the cast and the fact that it’s been four years since we were last immersed in the Anderson aesthetic (2014’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel”) make us ready to temporarily mute everything that’s problematic about the director’s work and dive back into his world of quirk with fresh eyes. Although, if we’ve learned anything from his movies, we can expect at least one of the dogs won’t make it to the closing credits.
