Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was the secret of every child. Many schools banned the series of grotesque stories due to its nightmare-fuel tales. The contraband was passed between kids, and later read underneath covers with a flashlight. So be afraid, be very afraid: Guillermo Del Toro’s book to screen adaption is crawling its way towards you. This is everything to know about the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark movie.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark movie plot
Written by Alvin Schwartz, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was one childhood book we didn't expect to be turned into a movie. The series of unconnected short stories were good fun, but didn't seem like movie material. But Guillermo del Toro, who wrote the script, will bring the individual stories together in an overarching plot. According to the movie’s official website, the time is 1968, in a small town of Mill Valley. The Bellows family are a fixture of the town. After all, it is in their mansion where a young girl named Sarah turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories. (Sound familar?) Her book survived to present day, where it is becoming a frightening reality. A group of kids must band together to face their fears and save the town.
From the description, it seems Del Toro incorporated the actual book into the film. The kids realize that the book, or perhaps Sarah’s imaginative diary, is the reason for the strange deaths happening in their town. Several of our favorite stories will feature as some of these incidents, including The Big Toe, The Dream, The Red Spot and Harold. From these alone, we can tell that Del Toro referenced all three of the Scary Stories books. But nothing is scarier than our favorite books turned into unfaithful adaptions. Lucky for us, from the brief teasers, it seems Del Toro is going to stay faithful to the original books.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark movie cast
André Øvredal took his time putting together the cast. “We spent months searching for and assembling the perfect group of actors to help us realize the most terrifying adaptation that we could conceive,” the director told Deadline. According to the same article, CBS Films cast the kids of the ensemble in August of last year. Zoe Colletti (Annie) was cast as the movie’s main protagonist, Stella Michaels. The rest of the kid’s cast will include Michael Garza (The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 1), Austin Abrams (The Americans), Gabriel Rush (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Austin Zajur (Fist Fight) and Natalie Ganzhorn (Make it Pop). Deadline announced in September of last year that the adults who were joining the cast included, Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Gil Bellows (Shawshank Redemption), and Lorraine Toussaint (Orange Is the New Black).
