‘Nixon in China’ now in Boston

Now you can watch The Met’s production of John Adams’ opera ‘Nixon in China’ without going to NYC.

Now playing at The Metropolitan Opera in New York is their production of composer John Adams’ “Nixon in China,” about Richard Nixon’s groundbreaking visit to China in 1972. The Saturday matinee will be transmitted worldwide through their “The Met: Live in HD” series. James Maddalena stars as Tricky Dick, a role he helped create and has performed at opera houses around the world. He tells Metro all about it.

Do you enjoy the familiarity of this role or is it hard to make a performance fresh?

Nixon is such an interesting and complex character to play, and the demands of the piece are such that I’m never complacent about performing it.

What is your favorite part about playing Nixon?

I love the way that our Nixon can be deadly serious at one moment, and the next moment can do something that’s absolutely goofy.

It’s a nearly four-hour performance. How do you keep up your vocal strength?

Try to sing intelligently and pray.
