Not quite the same old song and dance

The title of Joe Perry’s new solo album, “Have Guitar, Will Travel,” basically sums up the status of the Aerosmith guitarist.

“In the last two-and-a-half weeks I’ve been from Hawaii to San Francisco, back to Boston, then to Dubai and from there went to London,” he says. “So I have my [focus] on the project, and that’s the stuff I can talk about.”

He’s giving a roundabout answer about the shaky future of Aerosmith. A few days after our interview he ditched the diplomacy and told the Las Vegas Sun that singer Steven Tyler would, in fact, be leaving the band after nearly 40 years.

But if the band is to continue without its famous big-mouthed singer, the guy who handles the vocals on Perry’s new album could certainly hit some of Tyler’s notes. The singer’s name is Hagen, and Perry’s wife found him on YouTube. Perry seems eager to downplay the similarity. “I think when he starts opening up and belting out in his style, there isn’t that much similarity,” he says of the young German singer.
