Most stars played it safe on last night’s red carpet for the86th Academy Awards. Solid colors and streamlined silhouettes ruled the roost, whileprints and bold choices were nixed by the stars’ style-savvy stylists.
But every year, a few duds slip through. This year, we send our blessings to a braless Liza Minnelli, as well as Jared Leto, Anne Hathaway and Lady Gaga.
You would think the style-consciousAnne Hathaway would try to hit it out of the park this year after last year’s Prada disaster. But, alas. The star looked like a backup dancer at a KISS concert. And was it us or was the bodice of her Gucci black silk column gown flashing subliminal messages throughout the night? It was probably saying, “Someone please introduce me to the man who looks likeKentucky Fried Jesus.”
Kentucky Fried Jesus, of course, refers to the newly minted Academy Award winner Jared Leto, who sported a whiteSaint Laurent tux jacket with aburgundy bow tie. We’ll give it to him: His hair looked flawless — it was raining, people — but mixing it with black tux pants made him look too much like a maître’d. A maître’d at the coolest restaurant in all the land, but amaître’d nonetheless.
Liza Minnelli, God bless her, came dressed all in blue, complete with an adorable matching blue streak in her hair. But it looked like she forgot one all-important accessory for when you are 67: a bra. Less time and effort on the Manic Panic and more atMaidenform, girlfriend.
And finally, Lady Gaga. It’s so hard to know with her, you know? Isthis just another one of her red carpet antics whereshe is trying to look like an albino Barbie? Or is her choice of a custom Brian Atwood gown her attempt at looking “normal”?
