Art imitates life in Joseph Ford’s aerial fashion photography that features split screens of aerial landscape shots and photos of clothing items. Ford was flying between ad campaigns around the world and found taking extra aerial photos a fun way to fill the gaps during the travel time to and from locations. A light bulb, or maybe a flash bulb, went off when he went back and reviewed his photos.
“I looked through my pictures and thought it would be interesting to do something with fashion with them,” he told Metro. “I took them to my friend at a Paris street wear magazine and we brainstormed a series that combines fashion with landscapes.”
The result is a stunning visual representation of man vs. nature: Sand dunes blend seamlessly into a patterned sweater, and train tracks lead to the zipper of a Barbour jacket.
Ford said he made the juxtapositions based on shape, color or texture. “The Missoni jumper with the landscape and caravan and people standing by – that was really the color of the earth and the texture of the stand that went well with the jumper,” he said. “But the photo with the watch – the colors contrasted strongly, but the watch came to mind when I saw the shape of the road.”
Ford took the aerial photos in a variety of locations, including Sicily, Sardinia, Mauritius and Morocco. He published the photos in French fashion magazine Wad and another set in German magazine Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin and paired the photos with clothing with the help of stylists, who preselected the clothing items.
