Play festival offers ‘a little slice of life’

Ten minutes isn't much time to tell a story. It is just enough time, according to Luna Theater Company's producing artistic director Gregory Scott Campbell, to "get a little slice of life." Luna is offering 10 such slices in its 10-minute play festival to celebrate the company's 10th anniversary season.
The theme of Luna's current season has been "Identity Crisis," with two full-length plays -- "How To Disappear Completely and Never Be Found" and "Bachelorette" -- having dealt with the concept on a macro level. The festival was designed to explore the same theme "on a multi-micro level," according to Campbell. This year's plays tackle concepts ranging from family trauma to corporate drudgery to Catherine the Great in limbo.
Campbell originally conceived the festival while on the board of the Philadelphia Theatre Alliance, resulting in the Spark Festival. When that festival ceased to exist, he reclaimed the 10-minute festival idea for his own company. Seven of the 10 pieces will be directed by Luna, with the remaining contributions by partner companies Renegade, Bright Light and the Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium.
Luna received 125 submissions, which they winnowed down to 10 based on quality, adherence to the theme and a match with Luna's mission of "producing intimate, intelligent, intense work," Campbell says. "And there's nothing more intimate than a 10-minute play."
