The Word: Power outage leads to a first for 'South Park'

For 16 years, "South Park" has been one of the world's only reasonably topical purveyors of animation.

For 16 years, "South Park" has been one of the world's only reasonably topical purveyors of animation. "South Park" is unlike most animated shows in that its incredibly short production schedule allows it to actually stay current. But the quick turnaround for their slightly animated little parka kids is a double-edged sword, and this week it finally gave them a papercut.

A blackout in South Park Studios meant that, for the first time ever, Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and their staff blew a deadline. The episode that was set to air on Oct. 16th, Ep. 1704, "Goth Kids 3: Dawn of the Posers," will instead air on October 23rd.

"It sucks to miss an air date but after all these years of tempting fate by delivering the show last minute, I guess it was bound to happen," Trey Parker said on South Park's website. The staff also provided a bunch of photos of themselves sitting around in the dark, in case anyone doubted their "a blackout ate my homework" tale of woe.

I guess we can let this gross lapse of professionalism slide, as long as it doesn't happen again for 16 years.
